The West-Eberhard Award

Eligibility - The award will be given to a promising junior scientist for outstanding achievements in the area of social insect biology.

Committee - The selection will be made by an Award Selection Committee composed of the presidents of the sections or their designees and the Secretary General of the IUSSI.

Members of IUSSI sections in good standing should nominate promising junior scientists from any section to represent those sections. Junior members of IUSSI sections in good standing can also self-nominate to their section. If necessary, each section will rank candidates and put forward the highest-ranked candidate.

The award, named after Marie-Jane West-Eberhard, was established in 2018 and was awarded for the first time in 2022.


The 2022 Award

The inaugural West-Eberhard Award was presented to Patrick Kennedy from the North-West European section of the IUSSI in recognition of his resaerch on kin-selection in wasps. Patrick gave a talk entitled "Life advice for wasps" summarizing some of his work and career. The award consisted of an engraved ornament, and a monetary award of US$ 500
